For this matching game, students need to say the name of the picture and find all the words that rhyme/belong to that word family.

For the Find the Sound Game, I plan on hot gluing the fairies to clothespins. Students need to chop up the picture into its' corresponding sounds. IE- the picture of the cat is chopped into c/a/t. The letter beneath the cat is /a/. Students need to clip the fairy to the first, middle, or last tooth...similar to Elkonin boxes.

I also made a game/worksheet that students roll a dice and fill in the numbers; however, I can't remember who I got the idea from. The original game that someone had posted, I believe, was for a Gingerbread theme. If you know, send me a message and I will ask them if I can post it. Otherwise, I will just post the picture.

A Couple of Sorts
I laminate the Community Helper Sort pieces and put velcro on the back. We do the sort as a class on the flannel board and then I add it to the Flannel Board Center.

The Needs vs Wants Sort is one of my favorite activities. The students are so funny when we discuss the things they need! To complete...I give the students a 12x18 piece of construction paper. They fold it in half and draw a line down the center, then glue needs to one side and wants on the opposite side.

Off to Mexico

Well, I won't have another post until late next week sometime. My husband and I have had a very difficult time personally for the past few months and it's time to regroup. We are leaving tomorrow for Cancun! I absolutely ADORE my class and I have left them in the most capable hands.

I have started a Community Helpers post, I plan on publishing when I return. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Try to stay warm!

Beginning Sound Sight Word Decoders

I'm always on the hunt to find new things for sight words, so last night I was bored and racking my brain. Suddenly, I remembered something I had seen at the IL Kindergarten Conference last year. The teacher would draw pictures and students had to identify the beginning sound of the picture and write it down. Once all the sounds of the pictures were identified and written, students would get to see and read the sight word...my explanation isn't the best...

Anyway, last night I made these nifty cards. I'm going to laminate them and my Kinder-Hoppers can write on them with a dry erase marker. I can't wait to use them during centers!!

I'm not quite sure why I love teaching sight words, but I do. I really enjoy finding and making new games and materials to teach them. Keeping everything interesting and enjoyable is quite a task.

Teaching Sight Words Weekly Format

I have utilized Kelly's Kindergarten http://www.kellyskindergarten.com/Games/GamestoMake/games_to_make.htm for many games that my students love. Sight word Uno has been hands-down the biggest hit EVER. I have used Kelly's format to go with special times and themes throughout the school year. I print color copies on cardstock and laminate them, and I print out black and white copies for the students to use at home. Here is an example of the Ocean version of Sight Word Uno.

So, last night I was bored. What to do, what to do. The teacher next door, who I adore, reminded me of a poem I used to do and was showing me the cute little snowmen her class made. This little book is dedicated to my friend, Mrs. Kappmeyer! Enjoy the snowday!!!

Write the Room

Write the room is a favorite center in my classroom. It gives students the opportunity to move around, use an array of props, gives them the opportunity to interact with text found within our classroom, challenges their hand-eye coordination, and practice handwriting.


Students use a clipboard and may choose to use colored pencils, regular pencils, or markers. I also have a variety of props they can choose from including; hats and glasses. I try to stick with foam hats to make them easy to clean. I can usually find them cheap at Michaels. I buy glasses from the Dollar Tree and pop out the lenses.
     

I try to change up my Write the Room sheets throughout the year to keep my Kinder-Hoppers challenged. I usually begin with simple sheets that have lines and progress through the year. Here are the sheets that keep students focused on beginning letter and sheets that have students searching for words that don't have a certain letter.
